New Abstract paintings

My most recent works are oil paintings in the series Energeia. These works are the counterpoint to some of the works in my Mindbug series, which address the horror of the pollution humans have created. This series addresses the solace people can find in nature. The works are based on my own photographs taken on walks, hikes, or just when I stop my car to look at something beautiful. The paintings are about motion and light, of moving through nature, expressing the action of experiencing nature. The word Energeia refers to half of Aristotle’s definition of motion – the “being in action”.   Another influence for this series is the Romanticists, for many of the titles, and also some of my thoughts, how the poets escaped in nature and yearned to make the public understand what they felt. What I’m getting from them mostly is their thoughtful words that correlate with my desire for people to understand and have the opportunity to be lost in nature enough to find solace. Humans can be changed by nature, drawn by it’s ability to make us feel comforted in its presence.

I have been in my studio alot, working on my new abstract painting series Energeia, as well as a few very experimental pieces that I’m having alot of fun with. My workshop schedule for the weeks from June 22 through July 6 will be Tuesday or Thursday from 9:30-12:30 mornings, or 6-9pm. With a minimum of two for each workshop, I’m hoping to be able to run 1-2 per week. Summer workshops are always open to students bringing or starting their own work if they like. I will also be doing specific 3 hour projects, to include:
Abstraction from Nature: the patterns of fruits and vegetables
Abstraction from Nature: Garden Inspiration(flowers & plants)
Abstraction from Nature: Patterns of cells and viruses
Abstraction from Mark-making
Abstract Expressionism: paint and play!

Here’s a new piece I finished last month, and started on the day the stock market plunged. I decided to call it Pooring down, that’s what the day was like, that’s what the markets were doing, and the piece turned out very dark, unlike others in my Mindbug series.
