New Abstract paintings

My most recent works are oil paintings in the series Energeia. These works are the counterpoint to some of the works in my Mindbug series, which address the horror of the pollution humans have created. This series addresses the solace people can find in nature. The works are based on my own photographs taken on walks, hikes, or just when I stop my car to look at something beautiful. The paintings are about motion and light, of moving through nature, expressing the action of experiencing nature. The word Energeia refers to half of Aristotle’s definition of motion – the “being in action”.   Another influence for this series is the Romanticists, for many of the titles, and also some of my thoughts, how the poets escaped in nature and yearned to make the public understand what they felt. What I’m getting from them mostly is their thoughtful words that correlate with my desire for people to understand and have the opportunity to be lost in nature enough to find solace. Humans can be changed by nature, drawn by it’s ability to make us feel comforted in its presence.

I have been in my studio alot, working on my new abstract painting series Energeia, as well as a few very experimental pieces that I’m having alot of fun with. My workshop schedule for the weeks from June 22 through July 6 will be Tuesday or Thursday from 9:30-12:30 mornings, or 6-9pm. With a minimum of two for each workshop, I’m hoping to be able to run 1-2 per week. Summer workshops are always open to students bringing or starting their own work if they like. I will also be doing specific 3 hour projects, to include:
Abstraction from Nature: the patterns of fruits and vegetables
Abstraction from Nature: Garden Inspiration(flowers & plants)
Abstraction from Nature: Patterns of cells and viruses
Abstraction from Mark-making
Abstract Expressionism: paint and play!

Spring!

Long awaited, fresh and green!
We have been anxiously waiting  –  for the leaves to unfurl, changing our environment from gray to green, and all of the promise of growth and warmth that lies ahead. Here’s an oil painting I did last month of the woods in my backyard. Spring color added by the artist just a touch early.

Open Studio aftermath

04_02_09-studio-pics-001
Well, my open studio weekend was a blast!
Fountain Street Studios had more than 800 people come through our doors on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. What a crowd –  I met tons of great people, and enjoyed discussing my art with all of you. If you’re checking out my blog for the first time after visiting my studio, thanks for stopping by.
Here’s a link if you haven’t yet viewed my Youtube video, attached to an online article by the Metrowest Daily News.
So back to the studio this week, all seemed so quiet, and I had some cleanup to get done, but I’ve been painting this week, working on finishing some works in progress.
Also, I’m gearing up to start my Studio Art Workshops, beginning the week after Spring Break. I’ll be doing one weekday am and Saturday am, for teens and adults. More info to come, but drop me a quick email if you’d like to be added to my mailing list.

Open studios

The artists at Fountain Street Studios are continuing our First Friday Studio Strolls through May. In April, the 13th Annual Fountain Street Open Studios weekend will be April 3-5. Friday from 5:30-8:30 will be the preview party, and Saturday and Sunday we’ll be open 11am-5pm. Please stop by my studio, 3rd floor east, no. 9, to see me and my work. Drop me an email if you’d like to be added to my mailing list (email and/or snail mail.) check out the list of artists at: www.fountainstreetstudios.com

Here’s a new piece I finished last month, and started on the day the stock market plunged. I decided to call it Pooring down, that’s what the day was like, that’s what the markets were doing, and the piece turned out very dark, unlike others in my Mindbug series.

dreaming of Truro…

January is the time of year I start daydreaming about being in Truro(Cape Cod), where we go every summer to vacation. I love to imagine the balmy breezes and going barefoot in the sand vs. the cold january reality of wool socks and fleece.

Sky blue pink is what my family and I call this gorgeous sunset color that we see in Truro.

These two photos both show the same work – Shimmer – which was influenced by the Truro sky. The interference pigments change color depending on how the light is hitting the painting, hence the really different palettes in the two photos.

I currently have two works in a show at The Post Road Art Center Mixed Media 2009 juried show, and Mind(e) scape won first place in the show! The other piece in the show is Connexion. My piece Cellwalk is currently in the Preview Show at the Amazing Things Art Center, in Framingham.

December blues

well December is upon us and for me there are always ups and downs to the holiday season. I decorated my house (but not my studio, I’d rather spend my time there working ) and here’s my December “blues”, a new piece that is a triptych (at least, I actually did five pieces in line) and it’s called filter/flow. I believe it will be a starting point for a series of larger works, and I used a new ink that has alot more color options than the classic India ink. But this piece is all blue…
thanks to all who dropped by on Friday for the open studio, it was great to see you all and I had alot of fun, hope you did too.

so now we have 20 degree weather here in NE and my studio was so cold that I wanted some of those fingerless gloves. oh well, I started a new ink series that is really interesting and  had me excited to keep working.  I’ll post my mind(e)scape, but I’m psyched to show the new stuff at my Friday Stroll at my studio December 5??

hope to see you there.

so…also let me tell you that mindescape was a long intensive drawing to finish and not only is it a scape from mind but it was especially an escape to my mind.
